House 1: Series Week 5 Sun, Feb 23 2:00 pm Sugar Swing 19.00 Beginner. House! Danced to a variety of electronic, urban, funk, and house music, it’s a groovy and fun type of street dance and urban dance style that came out of the nightclubs in the 1980s and 90s. It's current and ever evolving. Often confused with hip-hop and break dancing, you’ve probably seen it. Our urban dances are currently instructed by Thato X. Thato has trained in many styles of House and Hip-Hop dance from popping, tutting, house, locking and break dancing. As one of the original members of Edmonton’s own White Chocolate Dance crew, Thato has opened and performed for artists such as: Chris Brown, Ludacris, Ne-Yo, Ashanti, Ginuwine, Sean Paul, Kreesha Turner, The Game, Nelly Furtado, Obie Trice, 112, Boyz II Men, Fabolous, K-Ci & JoJo, Chingy, Sean Desmond, Massari, Gary Beals, Rochester, and Snoop Dogg!
Sprung Hardwood Floors + AC : We have a great facility with unique sprung hardwood floors, and AC! It is subtle, but if you dance on these floors for more than an hour versus most other dance floors, your joins and muscles will definitely appreciate it! The air conditioning certainly helps, especially when it gets warm outside.
Instructors Choice : Each class is individually designed by the instructors, based on the make-up of the class and what was not covered or what needs to be reviewed. Ie, they do not work off a curriculum Tap 2: Part A Week 4 Sun, Feb 23 2:30 pm Sugar Swing 19.00 After having completed level 1 and are feeling really confident with that material, you can consider our Tap 2 classes! Also great for those who have a few years of dance experience and want to brush up on their skills. This class is definitely challenging but you will gain so much by being here. There is a focus on technique variations on rhythm turns, along with variations on fundamentals of cramp rolls and paradiddles. You will also learn popular timesteps and combinations. Our instructor will bring teachings from historical repertoire to the students.

Tap Shoes : Tap Shoes are NOT required! Many students decide to get tap shoes eventually, but when you are first starting out, you can make-do with any shoe. Shoes that don't stick and have a harder sole made of leather or hard rubber usually work quite well. When you are ready for tap shoes, you can checkout a variety of used and new tap shoes at Onstage, which is located right behind Sugar Swing Ballroom
Tap Shoe Maintenance : PLEASE maintain your tap shoes and ensure there are no loose screws or sharp edges, to ensure our floor finish stays strong. Tap 3: Part A Week 7 Tue, Apr 1 7:00 pm Sugar Swing 19.00 Having completed level 2, here is where students learn lengthier routines of increased difficulty. Students will learn some tricks (such as pick-ups/pullbacks and wings). Routines will break away from repetition and start focusing on a variety of footwork and rhythms. A great way for students who have completed one year of Tap 2 or have at least 2 years of tap dance experience, to hone in on their skills and continue to grow in learning rhythms, phrasing, and memorization.
Tap Shoe Maintenance : PLEASE maintain your tap shoes and ensure there are no loose screws or sharp edges, to ensure our floor finish stays strong. If you are unsure, chat with our instructors at class! Tap 4&5: Part A Week 7 Tue, Apr 1 8:00 pm Sugar Swing 19.00 Intermediate-Advanced to Advanced. Semester program includes parts A and onward. At this level, your ability to learn combos is faster. Memorizing routines is fairly straight-forward, and you’ve learned many basic steps and combinations. There will be more complex rhythms and working with feel, shading, and tone. Often, dancers have been at it for 3-5 or more years with consistent practice throughout.
